In the vast landscape of Nollywood, where narratives often tread familiar paths within faith and religion, “Breath of Life” emerges as a refreshing departure. This Prime Video original, crafted by the talented BB Sasore and produced by Eku Edewor, gracefully navigates away from the commonplace clashes between clergies and witches or wayward pastors exploiting their congregations.

Released on Prime Video on November 15 by Nemsia Films, co-founded by Derin Adeyokunnu, “Breath of Life” offers a visually enchanting experience. The narrative unfolds through the lens of Elijah, exploring the intricate subject of faith. Award-worthy performances from Wale Ojo, Chimezie Imo, and Genoveva Umeh weave together a captivating storyline that keeps viewers glued till the end.

Unlike my usual reviews prompted by recent releases on my radar, “Breath of Life” earned its spot through glowing recommendations from two discerning viewers. The movie follows Timi’s transformative journey, lost in purpose until he encounters Elijah, altering the course of his life and destiny.

Set against the backdrop of the 1950s, the film delves into the extraordinary life of a young Timi, portrayed by the talented Ademola Adedoyin. Speaking 16 languages, rewriting holy books for fun, and achieving unparalleled feats, Timi’s character unfolds as a testament to the extraordinary, making “Breath of Life” a compelling exploration of faith and destiny.

After marrying his heartthrob Bridget (played by Eku Edewor) and starting a family, Timi’s idyllic life as a wealthy clergy in his Nigerian community took a drastic turn. The tranquility shattered when a local thug and gang wreaked havoc one fateful day.

As the villagers pushed back, involving colonial authorities, Timi’s attempt to seek justice by testifying against the thug, Baby Fire, became a harrowing nightmare. The corrupted colonial judge dismissed the charges, putting Timi and his family at grave risk. The tragic aftermath, fueled by Baby Fire’s vengeance, transformed Timi into a reclusive figure, defined by the haunting events.

Wale Ojo, portraying the older Timi in the 80s, delivers a stellar performance, showcasing his acting prowess. In an interview at the movie’s launch, Ojo shared the complexity of this role, contrasting it with previous one-dimensional characters. “Breath of Life” allowed him to dive into the intricacies of a character, exploring nuances and dimensions. Immersed in the production, Ojo highlighted the meticulous details, from props to the choice of setting, that enhanced the actor’s immersion in bringing this nuanced character to life.

Chimezie Imo, who breathes life into the character of Elijah, reveals a profound immersion into the role. Elijah, diagnosed with a severe lung disease mistaken for asthma, navigates his existence with an inhaler, his rasping breath and nervous demeanor becoming more pronounced in challenging situations.

Elijah’s initial encounter with Timi is far from smooth, typical of someone with a healthy suspicion of strangers. The houseboy who preceded Elijah was promptly dismissed with a gunshot, narrowly escaping a fatal encounter. As Ojo noted, “Breath of Life” excels in meticulous details, with Timi residing in a majestic mountainous abode overlooking the community, exuding an air of solitude. Cobwebs, haunting reminders of Timi’s chosen isolation after the tragic loss of his wife and daughter, offer a poignant visual narrative.

The film brilliantly employs various elements within Timi’s home to unlock bottled emotions. From the emotional reconnection to long-forgotten furniture to the nostalgic videos of his family playing, the morning newspaper ritual, and his specific preferences for scrambled eggs and coffee, each detail intricately weaves into the fabric of Timi’s character, defining the man beneath the reclusive exterior. “Breath of Life” proves to be a masterclass in storytelling through meticulous prop use and attention to detail, revealing the layers of emotion within its characters.

Anna, the nurse who blossomed into Elijah’s love interest, injected a refreshing dynamic into the relationship between Timi and Elijah. While Elijah often approached Timi with caution regarding his personal life, Anna fearlessly knocked on the front door, determined to make her presence known. Despite being turned away twice, Anna’s persistence prevailed, earning her entry into Timi’s house and, more importantly, into his heart.

In the face of challenges, it was Anna who bravely confronted her domineering father, Chief Amachree (played by Sam Dede), when he threatened to demolish the church Elijah used for Bible study. She also took it upon herself to confront Timi for not standing alongside Elijah to prevent the church’s demolition—a church that Timi had built upon relocating to the village.

“Breathe of Life” unfolds with a cascade of powerful emotional scenes. Elijah’s poignant plea for Anna’s love as he sits outside her home overnight in the rain resonates deeply. The joyous moment when Timi, after 30 years, rides a bicycle with Elijah adds a touch of heartwarming nostalgia. The climax, where Timi finds his faith and fervently begs God to sacrifice him to save a dying Elijah, is a powerful and tear-inducing testament to the film’s emotional depth.

Throughout its two-hour runtime, “Breath of Life” navigates every scene with precision, crafting a tapestry of emotions—joy, love, and friendship. This cinematic gem delivers a stunning storytelling experience, showcasing a side of Nollywood rarely known. Highly recommended for those seeking an exceptional cinematic journey.
